Story
In the midst of an international crisis, career diplomat Kate Wyler lands in a high-profile job she’s not suited for, with tectonic effects on her marriage and political future. Producers convinced both the American and British governments to allow them to use real-life locations as filming locations for the series, including the fledgling American Embassy (in Nine Elms), which opened in 2018. The UK allowed filming in the Foreign Secretary’s office, an honor rarely bestowed on a film or screen production, especially an American one. Although it is accurately described as occupying the largest residential plot (11 acres) in London next to Buckingham Palace, producers used a country house outside the city for filming purposes.

There’s a moment, I think it was about halfway through the show’s first season, where one of the subplots went in a slightly different direction than I expected, and that was a good thing. Otherwise, the dysfunctional relationships – both personal and professional – between the main characters somehow work, and I like that. The writers did a good job of keeping the plot tightly focused. Both the characters and the plot work.
Are they believable?
Sure, it’s not very believable, but it’s fun and at times exciting. «Madam Secretary» this isn’t, and neither is «Veep.» And that’s a very good thing. I should also mention that the acting and dialogue are pretty good too. The casting was good.
But that’s OK
Again, no. I understood very quickly that this is a fantasy, not reality. Netflix did a good job here. I’m really looking forward to season 2.
