Story
A horror web series crew goes live in an abandoned asylum. They soon encounter much more than they bargained for as they delve deeper into the nightmarish old building. The filmmakers couldn’t get permission from the South Korean government to film in the actual hospital, so the film’s scenes set in Gonjaam were filmed at the Busan National Maritime High School, where the production team closely followed the hospital’s floor plan to recreate the exact same exterior and hallways. At the beginning of the film, they meet at a restaurant for the first time.
Not a fool
In the shots where everyone jumps into the water, it looks like they just met the same people. *EDIT – They reference a previous trip & then *everyone who just met* jumped into the water. They talked about how to do it & then they did it. References Homecoming Haunted Hill (2007).
They soon disappear before they can open the door
Two teenagers are in front of the infamous room 402 of the abandoned Gonjiam Mental Hospital, trying to open the door and streaming from their mobile phones. The YouTube channel «Horror Times» owner Ha-joon (Wi Ha-joon) decides to broadcast live from Gonjiam, hoping to reach one million views, and sponsors will pay half a million dollars for advertising. Gonjian Psychiatric Hospital has a notorious past, as its director (Park Ji-ah) killed all the patients and then committed suicide. Ha-joon joins a team of six teenagers: three boys, Sung-hoon (Park Sung-hoon), Seung-wook (Seung-Wook Lee), and Je-Yoon (Jay Yoo); and three girls, Ah-yeon (Ah-yeon Oh) and rookies Charlotte (Ye-Won Mun) and Ji-Hyun (Park Ji-Hyun), to spend the night in Gonjiam and broadcast live.
When the effect begins, Charlotte and Ji-hyun are surprised and scared, but convinced to stay with the group
Ha-joon stays in the base tent, overseeing the delayed broadcast to edit his selections before streaming to the viewers, and the group splits up and heads to the four floors of the hospital. What the girls don’t know is that Ha-joon, Sung-hoon, and Seung-wook have set up fake supernatural effects to haunt the girls and thus the audience, who would be scared by the effects. But there is supernatural activity in Gonjam, and Hajin tries to figure out what is going on and continue broadcasting. "Gon-ji-am", also known as "Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum" (2018), is a predictable but tense "found footage" style film.
My vote is six
This low-budget film has terrifying and confusing cinematography with great camerawork, and is scary but ambiguous. The conclusion is kind of pointless. "Gonjiam" is for horror fans who like this kind of cheap movies because the unoriginal plot is fun. Title (Brazil): "Gonjiam: Manicômio Assombrado" («Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum»)
